With Hollywood’s reboot fever far from cooling, Warner Brothers has just announced a re-imagining of the 1980 comedy classic Caddyshack set to hit theaters in summer 2020 starring Shaquille O’Neal with M. Night Shyamalan attached to direct.
“This is a project that’s very close to my heart, almost as close to my heart as delicious Papa John’s pizza,” Shaq said while being interviewed at the green carpet for the Kid’s Choice Awards.
The original Caddyshack follows poor teen Danny Noonan as he works at a snobby country club, trying to win the favor of the club’s prominent members and the Caddy Day golf tournament to get money for college.
“The story of Danny using sports to achieve his dreams was something that felt very personal to me and my experience, just like how you’ll want to feel personal with your loved one with the soothing power of Gold Bond lotion,” O’Neal added.
Big fans of Shaquille O’Neal will be especially pleased with the new movie, because he is following in the steps of comedy greats like Eddie Murphy and Adam Sandler in the tradition of playing multiple characters in the same movie. But Shaq is one upping all of them, because he is playing every character in the movie. This is a unique challenge for an actor, but everyone that is involved with the project are confident that the 3-time NBA Championship winning actor is up to the task.
Shaq will also play the role of the gopher that terrorizes the golf course and its groundskeeper, with the help of motion capture technology. This pitting of Shaq vs. Shaq in the movie will add an interesting dynamic to the narrative, says director M. Night Shyamalan.
“With Shaq playing both the villainous gopher and the groundskeeper, Carl Spackler, the story will be ripe for the exploration of the duality of man, and what it is that makes people good or bad in a morally ambiguous world,” Shyamalan said in a Panera Bread bathroom I followed him into.
Shyamalan has lofty visions for this film, and audiences will no doubt be looking out for one of his signature twist endings. By bribing a craft services worker on-set, we were able to discover what that twist ending is.
